Chubb Classic celebrates 30 years with inaugural 1988 champion, Gary Player
Naples, Fla. – Chubb Classic officials announced today that Gary Player, the 1988 inaugural champion, will be in attendance at the 2017 Chubb Classic to help celebrate its 30th anniversary in southwest Florida. The Chubb Classic will take place February 13 – 19 at The TwinEagles Club.
Regarded as one of the greatest players in golf history, Mr. Player has won 167 tournaments world-wide spanning seven decades and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. Mr. Player is a three-time champion of the Masters Tournament (1961, 1974, 1978) and The Open Championship (1959, 1968, 1974), while also having claimed victories at the PGA Championship (1962, 1972) and U.S. Open (1965) throughout his career on the PGA Tour. He is still one of only 5 golfers ever to complete the Grand Slam of all four Major Championships.
The year 1988 marked the PGA TOUR Champions first year in Naples held at The Club at Pelican Bay. Mr. Player finished top of the leaderboard by one stroke to become the events inaugural champion for his ninth PGA TOUR Champions victory. The Chubb Classic will welcome Gary Player back to Naples during the celebration of its 30th year in southwest Florida. Mr. Player will tee it up in the official pro-am tournament and kick-off the first round of championship play with an honorary tee shot prior to the first round Friday morning, February 17.
