Despite posting a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday, Bernhard Langer still managed to prevail by three strokes over Fred Couples and claim the inaugural Chubb Classic at The TwinEagles Club in Naples, the 26th victory in his PGA TOUR Champions career. Langer had started the day with a seven-stroke advantage, but did not make his first birdie until No. 11 as others began to close the gap, including Couples. During a seven-hole stretch, Couples ran off four birdies and an eagle to get within two strokes with a birdie at No. 17 and a Langer bogey at No. 15. However, Couples saw his chances derailed when he made a bogey at No. 18 which increased Langer’s lead to three strokes. Despite a third bogey at No. 18, Langer held on to claim his third Chubb Classic crown.

With His Victory…..

  • Wins his 26th victory on the PGA TOUR Champions and moves into third place on

the all-time victory list behind Hale Irwin (45 wins) and Lee Trevino (29).

  • Goes wire-to-wire for the sixth time in his career as well as the fourth year in succession with a wire-to-wire victory
  • Wins this event for the third time (2011, 2013, 2016)
  • Wins at least one event for the 10th consecutive year, one shy of Hale Irwin’s record.
  • Wins his sixth PGA TOUR Champions event in Florida
  • Moves to the top of the 2016 money list as well as the Charles Schwab Cup race.

Bernhard Langer wins a second event on the PGA TOUR Champions for the third time. Langer also won the 2007 Administaff Small Business Classic, 2008 Administaff Small Business Classic, and 2014 Insperity Invitational.

With the win, Bernhard Langer became the 16th consecutive winner to come out of the final

grouping at this tournament. The last time it didn’t happen was in 2000 when Lanny Wadkins needed a final-round 64 to rally from three strokes back and eventually triumphed in a playoff.

In seven appearances in this tournament, Langer owns three wins, a pair of second-place finishes, a T3 and a T4. He has amassed $1,152,267, an average of $164,610 per start.

By going wire-to-wire Bernhard Langer became just the fourth winner in the 29-year history of the tournament to earn that distinction. Langer also went wire-to-wire in 2013. The other two winners were Lee Trevino (1990) and Allen Doyle (1999).

After an absence of six years, Fred Couples enjoyed another successful tournament in Naples. A winner in 2010, Couples made a late run at Bernhard Langer, finishing three strokes back and in sole possession of second place.

Bernhard Langer’s 1-over-par 73 ended a streak of 19 consecutive sub-par rounds dating back to last year.

Jesper Parnevik had his best finish on the PGA TOUR Champions with his T3 finish. It included a 5-under-par 67 in the final round.

Brandt Jobe, the medalist at last fall’s National Qualifying Tournament in Scottsdale, finished T6 in just his third start on the PGA TOUR Champions.

Defending champion Lee Janzen finished T17.
